Brussels is serviced by two airports – Brussels Zaventem Airport (BRU) and Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL).
Brussels Zaventem Airport is located 10km East of the city in the suburb of Zaventem. It is Brussels’ main airport and is used by many of the major international airlines.
There are a number of bus companies operating to and from the airport. The buses run from 4am to 11pm with a frequency of about 20mins.
The airport is serviced by its own train station, which is located below the terminal building. Trains run to and from the city four times each hour from 6:40am to 9:50pm.
Taxis to and from the airport should cost approximately €35.
Brussels South Charleroi Airport is located nearly 50 km from Brussels city centre near the town of Charleroi. The airport is used by the budget airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air.
A train service runs between Brussels and Charleroi the journey takes around 1hr 15 minutes and costs a flat rate of €10.50 from any train station in Belgium.
Buses run every hour between the airport and Brussels city centre starting at 4.30am (from Brussels) and ending at 11:30pm (from the airport). A single fare costs €11 whilst a return costs €20.
The Eurostar train service runs between London St Pancras station and Brussels South Station. Opened on the 14th of November 2007, the new St Pancras International Station offers a direct service to Brussels with a journey time of less than 2 hours. If booked early, the service offers excellent value for money and avoids the increasingly miserable experience of air travel.
The Brussels Metro offers a simple and efficient way to get around the city. There is also a comprehensive bus and tram network. The public transport services run with a universal ticketing system allowing for travel on buses, trams and trains.
Car rentals are available at the airport but be warned, Belgium did not require drivers licence exams until the 1970’s and driving can be a little hairy. The public transport provisions are very good so only drive if you must.
